Cloud Platform for Liquid Biopsy Analysis and Cancer Research
THE CHALLENGE
A spin-off from Hospital 12 de Octubre, specialised in non-invasive cancer diagnostic and monitoring products, faced a critical technological bottleneck arising from the need to process large volumes of genomic data.
Their processes depended on on-premise infrastructure and local workstations, with a high component of manual management. This situation slowed efficiency in response times and limited their capacity to scale care to a greater number of patients. The challenge was to completely redefine their workflows (genetic diagnosis, primer design, and Minimal Residual Disease —MRD— monitoring) by migrating to a fully automated, scalable, and secure cloud environment.
THE SOLUTION
GALEO designed and implemented a cloud-native platform on AWS that automates the complete genomic analysis cycle, structured around optimising three critical flows (Diagnosis, Primer Design, and MRD Monitoring).
The solution allows orchestrating and processing complex files (VCF, BAM, and FASTQ), covering not just the compute phase but the entire clinical cycle: including automatic medical report generation via interactive and dynamic PDFs, supported by a robust human approval and dynamic signature system integrable for expert validations.
And this is just the beginning: the technology roadmap points towards an increasingly autonomous and intelligent network, ready to scale its genomic knowledge base and accelerate medical research.
BUSINESS IMPACT
The transition from local manual processes to a 100% automated cloud environment has delivered tangible, dramatic results in operational efficiency:
- ≈1,000 annual hours: Direct savings in analyst labor, freeing the bioinformatics team from routine file preparation tasks.
- From 3 hours to ≈20 minutes: Radical reduction in computation time per execution during the Diagnosis phase.
- From 5 hours to just 5 minutes: Reduced turnaround time for Follow-up (MRD) workflows, resulting in 1,229 annual hours saved in computing capacity.
- Scalability and Security: Elimination of physical on-premise limitations, ensuring service availability and the security of sensitive medical data.
