Digital Twin Platform for the optimisation and management of the water cycle

The Challenge: Unifying the Entire Water Cycle

Aigües de Sabadell, a leading company in water cycle management and partly owned by the Agbar–Veolia Group, is currently undergoing a profound technological transformation as part of its Biotop Sabadell project. Its objective is to orient its operating model towards sustainability, the circular economy, and operational efficiency.

The main challenge was to overcome information silos within its Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The company needed to unify multiple disconnected data sources—such as plant control systems (SCADA), maintenance management systems (Mapex CMMS), energy management systems (CIRCUTOR software), and the facility’s BIM models—into a single platform capable of providing a comprehensive, real-time view.

The Solution: TwinPulse, the Core of the Digital Twin

In strategic collaboration with MSI Digital Builders, at GALEO we designed and implemented a solution based on TwinPulse, our Digital Twin SaaS platform hosted on AWS Cloud.

This solution integrates the facility’s 3D BIM models and point cloud data with telemetry and corporate systems, transforming the plant’s static representation into a dynamic and living environment.

The key capabilities implemented include:

  • Interactive 3D/2D visualization: Spatial navigation throughout the plant with direct mapping of physical assets and their status.
  • Real-time dashboards and monitoring: Control panels tailored to different user profiles (operators, technicians, and analysts) to visualize flow rates, electricity consumption, and equipment status.
  • Bidirectional integration: Direct connection with the SCADA system for operational data, and with the CMMS for consulting and creating work orders or incidents directly from the 3D model.
  • Advanced alert system: Configurable business rules that visually notify failures directly on the corresponding BIM model elements.

The Impact: Data-Driven and Sustainable Operations

The implementation of the digital twin has transformed the way Aigües de Sabadell interacts with its infrastructure, achieving key operational benefits:

  • Reduction in costs and response times: By having all technical documentation and alerts available within a single graphical interface, preventive maintenance is optimized, and unexpected shutdowns or costly breakdowns are avoided.
  • Faster and more informed decision-making: Data centralization eliminates duplication and provides real-time analysis of asset health and the WWTP’s energy consumption.
  • Scalable and secure infrastructure: Thanks to its AWS-based architecture, the platform not only guarantees cybersecurity through VPN connectivity and encryption but is also prepared to scale and incorporate future Artificial Intelligence modules, predictive maintenance capabilities, or integrations with other facilities.
  • Driving sustainability: It facilitates comprehensive monitoring of environmental and energy-related processes, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the European Green Deal.
