Scaling the Ultra-Fast Charging Network Operations

THE CHALLENGE

Operating a fast and ultra-fast charging network posed several critical challenges as the infrastructure grew in volume and complexity:

  • Operational scaling of a distributed network: The accelerated growth in the number of charge points required a centralised supervision model capable of operating hundreds of geographically distributed chargers.
  • Managing multiple power levels and technologies: The coexistence of fast and ultra-fast chargers (50–150 kW) from different manufacturers and configurations made it difficult to standardise operations and control the network.
  • High volume of events and messaging: OCPP-based communication generated a high volume of daily messages that needed to be processed reliably, in order, and in real time.
  • Availability and user experience: Lack of immediate visibility into the status of charge points directly impacted service availability and the end-user experience.

Direct impact: growing operational complexity, risk of charge point unavailability, and difficulty scaling the network while maintaining high service quality levels.

THE SOLUTION

GALEO developed EVBrain, an intelligent operations platform for the remote supervision and management of fast and ultra-fast charging infrastructure, built on a cloud-native architecture.

The solution enables:

  1. Centralised supervision of the charging network: unified management of over 500 charge points, providing a real-time global view of infrastructure status.
  2. OCPP messaging ingestion and processing: reception, filtering, and processing of over 150,000 daily messages, routed via MQTT to a single backend.
  3. Real-time operational monitoring: continuous tracking of the status, availability, and performance of each charge point.
  4. Incident detection and management: early identification of faults and operational anomalies to reduce intervention times and improve service continuity.
  5. Scalable architecture ready for growth.
  6. Support for operational and strategic decisions: consolidation of operational data to facilitate daily management and network expansion planning.
  7. C-Level focus: shifting from reactive infrastructure management to an intelligent, scalable, service-availability-oriented operation.

BUSINESS IMPACT

Quantitative results:

  • +1,100 charge points in operation (+2,000 logical outlets)
  • +500,000 events processed per day
  • +97% service availability (vs. 82% initially)
  • Significant improvement in continuity and network scalability

Qualitative results: The EVBrain platform has enabled the transition from a reactive infrastructure to a proactive and intelligent operation, mitigating the risk of charge point downtime.

ARCHITECTURE & TECHNOLOGY

The solution is a cloud-native platform based on AWS.

  • It uses AWS IoT Core to ingest more than 150,000 daily messages using the OCPP protocol via MQTT.
  • For storage and processing, it employs Amazon SQS, AWS Lambda, Amazon DynamoDB, and Amazon Timestream, connecting to application layers through Amazon API Gateway and CloudFront.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

“The solution allows us to process large volumes of data and monitor equipment behaviour in real time. This translates into advanced event control and much more proactive service management. Thanks to its filtering capability, we can obtain precise information and respond immediately. We also have a global view of the network status and its evolution over time.”
